Active School Week 2016

 

 

 

The Active School Flag or Blue Flag was launched by the Department of Education to recognise schools (primary,post-primary and special schools) that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community.We have always promoted physical activity in Carnmore as it is crucial for the healthy physical, mental and educational development of every child. This year we have decided to put even more focus on this area and we will be striving to achieve the Active School Blue Flag.

 

Recent WHO statistics on obesity have revealed that Ireland is predicted to be the most obese country in Europe within the next 15 years. This will result over time in exceptionally high levels of chronic illness throughout the country including diabetes, heart disease and stroke unless the problem can be tackled early.

 

Getting out and being active is also a great way to manage stress. Being active helps release chemicals in your brain (endorphins), which have a positive effect on your mood. Being physically healthy also results in improved self esteem and body image, while taking part in group sports promotes social development.

The week of the 25^th to the 29^th of April will be Active School Week for Carnmore N.S. The ASW initiative is about providing FUN and INCLUSIVEphysical activity opportunities for ALL members of the school community. It alsoallows schools to reinforce the message that not only is physical activity good for you but it also enjoyable. During this week we plan to run a broad range of fun physical activities as well as coaching sessions in order to expose the children to a variety of activities which are available locally and physical activities they may not have tried before.
