Stair na Scoile
The History of our School
D'oscail ár scoil ar an seú lá déag de Mheitheamh sa bhliain míle ocht gcéad ochtó is cúig. Bhí sé an bhéag agus bhí dhá sheomra ranga ann. Ba é Fr. McHugh an sagart ag an t-am seo. Bhí dhá múínteoirí ann. Bhí na sagairt paróiste an-cumhachtach ag an am sin. Bhí sé in ann daoine a fhostú agus a dhífhostú. Bhí a lán tréimhsí speisialta ag S. N. Cearn Mór, go háirithe nuair a dífhostaíodh Máirtín O'Cadhain, an phríomhoide nua agus scríbhneoir cáiliúil ag an t-am, de dheasca máirseáil na mbuachaillí a theagaisc.
Sa bhlian 1968, rinneadh sagairt pharoiste de Fr. Callanan agus chuir sé uisce reatha agus leithris isteach sa scoil. Bhí poll san urlár agus uaireanta, preabadh aníos luch chun iúl na pháistí a thógáil den oibre.
Our old school opened on the 16th of June 1885. It was very small and it had two classrooms. There was a very small playground. The parish priest at the time was Fr. McHugh. There were two teachers at the time. The parish priest was very powerful. He had the power to fire and hire teachers. From 1880 to 1975 he had power over the school. Carnmore National School had special moments too, when the new principal Máirtin O'Cadhain, the noted Irish writer, was sacked for teaching the boys to march in the classroom.
In 1968 Fr. Callanan became parish priest and put running water and flush toilets in the school. There were holes in the floors and every now and then a mouse would pop up and distract the class from their work. It was amusing for the children but for teacher it was distracting.
In 1983, after a lot of work and fundraising by the Carnmore Community ( including a "Mayor of Carnmore" campaign), the children and teachers moved into their new school. It was a state of the art 4 classroom school with a PE hall.
Numbers continued to rise and in 2005 a further extension was opened by Noel Grealish, TD and past pupil. This added 3 more classroom and offices.
More recently we have added 2 Learning Support rooms,a 3/4 acre pitch and safer parking to complete which is by any standards a school that meets all the diverse needs of its community.
